How do I get a California Security Guard Card?

In California, security guards are licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), which is a part of the California Department of Consumer Affairs. The Bureau does not itself provide training but will process an application for a license when presented with evidence of the relevant training, and LiveScan fingerprinting. This online course prepares you to apply for a Guard Card.

We will provide all the forms and instructions you will need to apply for a Guard Card. Here’s an outline of the steps you will need to take so you can see what’s involved.

Step 1: Take Our Online Guard Card Course

The first step is to take an 8-hour introductory pre-licensing course that will earn you a Guard Card. Within six months, a further 32 hours of training is mandatory for all new security officers who are in employment.

The 8-hour Guard Card online course consists of 2 parts:

  1. Power to Arrest.
  2. Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Submit your Guard Card application to the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). You can do this either online or by mail.

Online: This is recommended for a faster turnaround time.

Find the form "Initial Security Guard Registration".
Fill out the form, pay the fee and submit.

Mail: Using the post office is a slower process but is still dependable. Download and print this form.
Complete the form and mail it with a check or money order for the fee to:

Step 3: Get Fingerprinted

When you successfully pass the State exam. You must get your fingerprints taken at a LiveScan location for BSIS to complete its application process. Your Application Package will include the LiveScan form.
